The Tallest Man On Earth, Neumos, 9/9/10

How tall is the Tallest Man on Earth?
5’7”, so just about my height.
Kristian Matsson, is leaving Sweden to take on the American road again in support of his second album, The Wild Hunt, under the moniker The Tallest Man on Earth. His album came out with much critical acclaim and has been garnering him much popularity (as well as his touring with acts such as Bon Iver.) This time around, Kristian is bringing along S.Carey, percussionist for Bon Iver who is now supporting his solo debut album which is to be released later this year in the fall.
Matsson’s music has a sense of purity and intimacy. It brings you into his world and allows you to see a man at his core; sitting, singing and pouring his heart out into the audience and the air. His music manages to combine simplicity with complexity. His fast, almost frantic, finger-picking is layered beneath his vocals as he sings lighthearted melodies that scream somewhere between pain and love.
The Tallest Man on Earth will be performing with S. Carey at Neumos on September 9th. It’s a 21+ show, and tickets are $15 in advance.

They have a new stage setup!
This was my third time seeing Phantogram; the first also being at Neumos where they opened for Antlers, and the second at Sasquatch! 2010 where they played the Yeti Stage. Both of those performances had technical hiccups. Nothing that was show ending, but never-the-less probably embarrassing for the two. You can see in pics that Sarah had a cumbersome wooden keyboard stand that housed their mixer, Kaoss Pad, a laptop, two keyboards, a midi controller, and a few other things.

“Lucy’s underground, she’s got a mouth to feed.” No longer is she in the sky and lavished with fine jewelry. This is a new Lucy; one that has moved past the optimism of earlier generations. She has seen the repeated follies of governments that consider it an act of love to kill with the push of a button and would rather die than to stand with someone who would do that. Too deep? Don’t worry you can still dance to it.

Holy Fuck is heading into town Wednesday night for a show at Neumos, along with Indian Jewelry and ClipD Breaks, in support of their latest album, Latin, released in May of this year. It’s the third release by the Toronto band which was recorded in the most suiting of all places for them; a barn. This album is the first to have a concrete rhythm section, with touring members Matt McQuaid and Matt Schulz playing bass and drums respectively, and filling the revolving positions that have been in the band.

Chris Cain and Keith Murray had the glorious chance to sit down with us just prior to their July 28th show at Neumos. These guys were a lot of fun. If you’ve seen them before, you know about their unfettered persiflage, and they did not dissapoint in this interview. The Nappy Roots are one of my favorite southern hip-hop groups ever, probably second only to Outkast. Their first major label album, Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz is infused with a variety of styles, from vaguely menacing “Country Boyz” to celebratory anthem “Awnaw” to reminiscent, guitar-backed “Po’ Folks,” all held together by a sort of carefree honesty and a massive dose of twang.
