Hip-hop has been evolving quickly over the years. The beats, the icons, the matter at hand; it’s all been changing right before our eyes in such subtle ways it can get hard to notice until you step back and look at the grand scheme of it all. And where are the People Under The Stairs in all of this? Right at their roots where they want to be.
It’s been a long… Read on

How tall is the Tallest Man on Earth?
5’7”, so just about my height.
Kristian Matsson, is leaving Sweden to take on the American road again in support of his second album, The Wild Hunt, under the moniker The Tallest Man on Earth. His album came out with much critical acclaim and has been garnering him much popularity (as well as his touring with acts such as Bon Iver.) This… Read on

This coming Monday! Tokyo Police Club (and Freelance Whales!) at Neumos! I’m not extensively familiar with either of these bands, though I don’t feel bad about it – they’ve only released an album or two apiece, and have just begun to catch my attention. So, in lieu of a comprehensive, historiographical preview, I present the following free-associative quasi-poetic single-phrase summaries of the songs on each group’s Myspace page, by me and my sister Maura, respectively:

Chris Cain and Keith Murray had the glorious chance to sit down with us just prior to their July 28th show at Neumos. These guys were a lot of fun. If you’ve seen them before, you know about their unfettered persiflage, and they did not dissapoint in this interview. Here are some pics from the show as well… Oh, and a special thanks to the guys for taking the time for us, too.

Let me preface this article by relating a minor fiasco I encountered at the door to Neumos – think of this as a footnote or italicized introduction to an otherwise good experience. After a great meal at the Elysian Brewer, my friend and I were made to wait 45 minutes and almost denied entry to the venue: he had a brand new driver’s license in a new format of which Neumos was not aware. Despite the… Read on

The Nappy Roots are one of my favorite southern hip-hop groups ever, probably second only to Outkast. Their first major label album, Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz is infused with a variety of styles, from vaguely menacing “Country Boyz” to celebratory anthem “Awnaw” to reminiscent, guitar-backed “Po’ Folks,” all held together by a sort of carefree honesty and a massive dose of twang. They can go straight from country fun-house bop nonsense (Sholiz) to cliched cautionary musings… Read on

The doors opened at 9; I arrived at 11:30. YelaWolf wasn’t scheduled to take the stage until half past midnight, and I had a Godard film rented from the library that I really wanted to watch first. After a brief search for parking, I made it to Nectar with plenty of time to see the final opening act, local hip-hop collective Cloud Nice. Their music seemed run of the mill at first, but grew on me… Read on

Alright kid, you got through Friday and you’re heading into Saturday with one hell of a hangover. Get brunch at your favorite Cap Hill spot (Coastal Kitchen is doing some great things with feta and eggs these days) and make sure you’re ready to go by 2:15 when The Redwood Plan takes the main stage. Former Ms. Led vocalist Lesli Wood fronts this highly energetic group that will have you thanking… Read on

Seattle…It’s Time to Get Our Groove On!
As a kid growing up in Texas, I remember getting out the salt shaker after every time it rained. My mission was to walk up to all the slugs that had been washed up from their burrows and pour salt over them – no offense to any PETA members out there…I was just a kid who didn’t know any better. Anyway, for all those who may not know or… Read on

Neema of Unexpected Arrival is playing this Friday at Neumos and you can see him for FREE!
Known for his lightning fast lyrical style, Neema was KUBE 93’s NW Artist of the year in 2002 and 2003. He’s worked with a bunch of hip-hop’s biggest hitters including Kurupt, Twista, Jurasic 5, and DJ Quick. This Friday Neema is throwing his record release party for his latest EP, The Essence.
Also appearing with Neema will be Clockwork, Billy Patron, Eighty 4… Read on
